PIP5583 Engine Squeak or Squeal Noise Coming From the Water Pump

Condition Some customers may comment that there is a slight squeak or squeal noise coming from the front of engine belt area. This noise may or may not be present at the time vehicle comes in.
Cause This condition may be caused by lack of coolant (lubricant) at the water pump seal mating surfaces.



If this condition is found, perform the following procedure and reevaluate.

  1. Listen to the water pump with a stethoscope or chassis ears to see if the suspect noise is heard for later comparison.

NOTE: Please follow the remaining steps even if you can’t hear the noise at this time.

  1. Remove engine cover.
  2. Remove inlet duct from throttle body and air cleaner box.
  3. Remove bracket on top of water pump.
  4. Put 3-4 drops of coolant in the vent hole as shown in illustration below.

Do not add more coolant than recommended at this time.

Note: Be careful to not get any coolant on the pulley or drive belt.

  1. Reassemble components that were previously removed.
  2. Start vehicle and con rm that squeak/squeal noise is gone.
  3. If noise is still present repeat step 5 and reevaluate.
  4. If noise is still there it will be necessary to replace water pump assembly.

Note: This is a preliminary temporary diagnostic and repair.

As more investigation information becomes available this PI will be updated or advanced to a bulletin.
