Supersession Statement

This PI Was Superseded To Update Model Years. Please Discard PIP5222.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

 

Condition / Concern

Difficulty in detecting internal combustion engine (ICE) misfires with a fully charged high voltage (HV) battery.

 

Recommendations / Instructions

If the high voltage battery is fully charged and the hood is opened, the ICE runs at very low load since the HV battery cannot accept any additional charge.

At this very low load, actual ICE misfire is not detected.

Whenever performing strategy based diagnostics related to misfire (P0300) on the VOLT or ELR models, the service technician should ensure that the HV battery charge indicator is showing at least 2 bars below fully charged.

This will increase the ICE load and enable the misfire detection for proper diagnosis.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
