Driver’s Seat Belt Tensioner Cable May Separate

If the pretensioner cable becomes fatigued or breaks, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

 

Summary

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500, and Tahoe Police Pursuit and Special-Service vehicles. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver’s seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

Involved Region or Country This program applies to U.S. dealers only and is designed to help facilitate higher completion rates for the safety recalls and vehicle models identified above.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is overseeing efforts across all vehicle manufacturers to help improve completion rates for the Takata air bag recall. In support of this initiative, General Motors implemented a Takata Completion Rate Improvement Program on October 1, 2017. The program officially ended on December 31, 2017, but was extended through February 28, 2018 with modifications and then extended again through March 31, 2018.

This service update should be performed on vehicles in dealer inventory only. Involved vehicles are marked “open” on the Investigate Vehicle History screen in GM Global Warranty Management system. This site should always be checked to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs.

Condition A splash shield in the right front hand wheel house may have not been installed. Customers may experience a no start condition due to debris and water entering the impacted area covered by the shield.
Correction Dealers are to install a splash shield if it is missing. They should also inspect the two ring terminals (starter / ground) within the impacted area for corrosion and clean the area as necessary.
